Sustainability

Sustainable construction can be achieved by working in partnership with our clients, other stakeholders and local communities. A shared understanding of the needs and impacts of schemes can be created, together with a perspective of what is technically possible and affordable.

Heery help translate this understanding into reality by working openly with designers, contractors and suppliers to adopt new ideas and technologies to create enduring sustainable solutions.

Here we benefit from the experiences of others in the Balfour Beatty Group, where positive steps have been taken since 2002 to engage in the debate on sustainable development. These include:

  • Continued support of the third phase of Forum for the Future's ‘Engineers for the 21st Century' project in 2005-6;
  • Balfour Beatty Capital worked on a system to measure their progress and effectiveness against the Government's top 20 sustainable development indicators;
  • A regular forum to promote sustainable technologies in PFI projects;
  • Continued review of progress and shared ideas at our regular Task Group.

Queen Margaret University College:
The Sustainable Campus

Queen Margaret University College

Heery were appointed Project Managers and Employers Agent for construction of QMUC's new campus in Musselburgh, East Lothian.

Great care has been taken to design the project to achieve BREEAM EXCELLENT, CEEQUAL EXCELLENT and ENVEST EXEMPLAR accreditation. Subject to Grant Funding Approval, the introduction of BioMass Heat Generation will give QMUC the lowest carbon footprint of any UK University - a sustainable campus indeed.

Heery instigated the early appointment of a sustainability consultant who led the team in creating a policy and objectives, a balanced cost model and a series of design deliverables that together have meant that these impressive goals have been realised.

Further examples of our approach to managing sustainability are contained in the Annual Balfour Beatty Safety, Environmental and Social Report, which is available on the Balfour Beatty website.
